There is no worse insult for a woman than to be called “vié volan” (old bird), as the Creole expression goes. In Creole, the language of my native island of Guadeloupe, the word “witch” is translated by “volan,” meaning a bird with a raucous voice, dressed in a dismal gray plumage, in sharp contrast with the brightly colored feathers of the hummingbird.
